DIY stool covers

If you use ordinary wooden stools in the kitchen, then you probably know that sitting on them for a long time is not very convenient. And sometimes you want after a family dinner or a day off not to run away immediately for business, but to linger and spend another hour or so over a cup of tea and a conversation with your loved ones. To make this pastime more comfortable, we suggest making removable covers for stools.

The choice of patterns for sewing covers on a stool

If you are an experienced seamstress, then for such a simple product you probably will not need a pattern. If you are a beginner, and rarely do sewing, then, in order not to spoil the fabric, use the pattern. To do this, measure the dimensions of all sides of the seat and transfer them to a previously prepared paper or cardboard whatman.

Do not forget to add 3-6 cm of reserve to the sides of the product, as a synthetic winterizer or foam rubber, or other filler will be placed inside, as well as for the design of seams.

Cut out the pattern, circle it with a chalk or a piece of soap on the fabric. And then on the lining, as well as on the selected filler, but already without a margin on the sides. Now you can start sewing the product.

How to sew a seat on a stool with your own hands? There are other options for the manufacture of fabric covers for stools, they differ mainly in the way they are attached to the seat. You might like the product with rubber bands in the corners rather than around the entire perimeter. In addition to elastic bands, corners can be sewn with ribbons that will be tied in the form of bows around the legs of the stool.

But, in our opinion, the most practical and with reliable fastening to the seat is still the first option with an elastic band around the perimeter of the product. Next, consider the step-by-step instructions for its manufacture.

What materials and tools will be required

How to sew a cover on a stool with your own hands, the photo of which can be seen above? For independent sewing of a wrap on a stool with your own hands, you must first determine the fabric. It can be taken from home stocks, in this case you will not have to spend additional money, and we can assume that removable wraps for stools will cost you almost free.

But if it is important for you that the soft seats harmoniously fit into the interior of the kitchen, then it is better to purchase a new fabric, the desired color and texture. To maintain harmony, the color scheme of covers on stools should be combined with the color of curtains and tablecloths in the kitchen. White and beige shades look good, but for the kitchen they are not the best option, such covers will get dirty very quickly. Therefore, it is better to choose darker tones or multi-color.

How to sew a cover on an elastic stool? You will also need fabric for the back, that is, the lining. It is better to take soft textiles so that it completely fits the seat. The size of the fabric necessary for sewing the seats is calculated as follows: the surface area of the stool increased by 10 cm. It is convenient to make markings on the fabric with a chalk or a small piece of soap.

In addition to the fabric, it is necessary to purchase an elastic band from textiles 2-3 cm wide and a soft filler for the seats. Either foam rubber with a thickness of about 4 cm can be used as a filler. Instead of foam rubber, for example, synthetic winterizer, felt, wool fabric and even unnecessary scraps of fabric can be suitable.

Also, you need durable threads of the same color range as the manufactured covers, and pins.

Step-by-step manufacturing instructions

Having cut out the necessary details from the fabric, lining and filler, we proceed to sewing the product. The manufacturing process of the cover consists of the following actions:

  1. We combine the synthetic winterizer (or other material selected for the filler) and the lining fabric and sew along the perimeter.
  2. Along the perimeter of the upper part of the cover, it is necessary to leave a groove by tucking the fabric and stitching the tuck. Next, turn up and sew the inlet section.
  3. Attach the previously stitched lower part with filler to the upper part and sew them along the perimeter to each other, use a blind seam for this.
  4. Then, using a pin, stretch the elastic band inside the hemmed lapel; the ends of the elastic band must be sewn. The hole should also be sewn up.

After that, you can try on the resulting product on a stool, if it sits freely, you can slightly suture it in the corners from the inside.

How to decorate covers

Decor elements, lace, ribbons, etc., will help to make seat covers more vivid and individual. If a plain fabric is chosen for upholstery, then it will be very profitable to look like stitch embroidery. Large flowers in the center, perimeter ornament or large abstract pictures look good. Just choose threads more durable and with a stable color so that the embroidery does not deteriorate during operation and washing the covers.

Making seat covers with your own hands is not only a way to make your stools more convenient and comfortable for a long rest, but also a great opportunity to give your home exclusivity, sincerity and coziness.
