Black screen on a laptop

The user turns on the laptop, waits for the download, but in vain - the display remains black. Restarting does not correct this situation. On the sources of this problem and how to fix it, we will discuss in our article.

Why does the laptop work, but the screen is black

This can occur due to both hardware and software failures.

In the first situation, only part of the problems are resolved by the user. Sources of violations:

  • mechanical, chemical or other damage (for example, overheating, incorrect actions of the owner);
  • problems in the loop (it connects the display matrix to the system board);
  • weak contact surface of the memory rails.

Software failures are easy to fix, usually as a result of exposure to viruses that cause problems in the operating system.

How to remove the black laptop screen after turning on

Before proceeding to more serious actions, you should ensure the integrity of some elements of the PC:

  1. Inspect the cable and power plug - if there is a violation of insulation or serious wear.
  2. We check the performance of the battery, as it can be discharged or out of order. To do this, connect the laptop to the network and see if the charge and power indicators are lit.
  3. If the backlight does not work, remove the battery. We look through the contacts of the element and the laptop itself for plaque (gray, green) or clogging. Defects are removed with a normal eraser.

Important! In some models, to get to the item, you will need to unscrew the back of the case. Before installing the battery in place, press and hold the power key (to remove residual charge).

If problems are found, replace the wire, charge the battery or buy a new one.

We reset settings

If all the indicators are functioning, resetting the computer parameters can help:

  1. Disconnect the device from the network, remove the battery and press the start button for 15-20 seconds.
  2. Then we act in reverse order - install the battery, activate the power.
  3. Turn on the device and select the standard boot mode in the menu.
  4. Click "Enter". The process of resetting the settings is completed.

Check the display for performance

If the monitor is not working, but you can hear that the system is loading - for example, the fan is noisy, it indicates a hardware failure.

Verify the activity of the video card (motherboard) loop connected to the screen matrix. This can be done by connecting the laptop to another monitor (TV or desktop PC) via the appropriate connector. Such a connection is supported by HDMI, DVI ports in modern devices, in older models - VGA.

After connecting to the screen, restart the device.

The image that appears indicates a problem with the laptop display (problems with the backlight or cable).

Important! To do the job qualitatively: to buy a suitable component, to replace the part correctly, without harming the equipment, only an experienced user can. Therefore, we recommend to contact the service workshop.

Checking BIOS settings

Errors in the parameters can be corrected by zeroing all menu indications.

During system boot, press the corresponding key repeatedly. It is indicated in the instructions for the device, it can be Del, F1, F12, various combinations of buttons.

Attention! In order not to act blindly, we recommend connecting to the laptop another, working screen.

After the BIOS window appears, press the F9 button (configuration reset) or go to the Exit section and activate the Load Setup Defaults line.

To confirm the operation, click Enter.

Consistently use F10 and Y, thereby saving the changes and closing the interface. Reboot the device.

Check the memory strip

Problems can be associated with a violation of the density of contacts (due to moisture penetration, temperature drops, etc.). Procedure:

  1. Disconnect the power cord, remove the battery, press and hold the power key.
  2. The memory board can be located in a special compartment or in a common space. In the first case, unscrew the bolts on a separate cover, in the second - remove the back of the case. The screws are of different lengths, so everyone during the reassembly process must be installed in the same slot.
  3. Module slats are held in place by latches. To extract the component, move the mechanisms in opposite directions.
  4. Clean contact surfaces with an eraser.
  5. If there are additional slots, we try to install a board in one of them. When handling contacts, proceed carefully to avoid damage.
  6. We install the board in place (at an angle of 45 degrees), fix it.
  7. Turn the screws in reverse order and connect the power.

We determine the presence of malicious applications.

Often the problem lies in the viruses recorded in the system. If, in addition to the black screen, the laptop turns itself off, this indicates a virus infection.

Reference! If necessary, use the additional screen (see description above).

Activate the safe mode: during the reboot process, press F8 (or another key) for a few seconds. In the opened window, select the appropriate option.

After Windows starts, run the antivirus program, activate the full scan of the laptop.

Upon completion of the process, the application will either automatically destroy the detected threats, or offer the user a choice (“cure” files, their complete deletion).

Reference! Safe mode allows you to install an antivirus when it is missing.

Apply bootable external media

Serious system failures can be eliminated by reinstalling the OS. Algorithm of actions:

  • connect the drive to the USB port or load a disk with the distribution kit into the disk drive;
  • restart the laptop, enter the BIOS interface (as described above);
  • select the option to boot from an external device (specify the appropriate disk number);
  • save changes and exit the menu;
  • reboot the device - external media is now involved;
  • in the opened window activate "System Restore", click "Next";
  • To restore the boot items, apply the "Repair Startup" item.

At the end of the process, the corrected system is started, the display must be in working condition.

We have described the available methods of how the user can eliminate the black screen of the laptop. In more serious situations, diagnostics and professional repairs will be required, in this case, contact the service center.
