Spin the drum: how to get a foreign object out of the washing machine with your own hands

A foreign object stuck in the drum of the washing machine is a common problem that can occur during any washing cycle. However, its frequency of occurrence does not in any way neutralize the potential harm that it can cause both things and the washing machine as a whole.

Consider this problem from several aspects!

Features of eliminating the problem: why did a foreign object get into the drum?

The first, and most obvious, reason is the design features of the drum.

Designers are trying to combine several basic functions and tasks in this element at once: savings in production, washing efficiency, optimization of noise manifestations, and others. Due to the multifaceted nature of the task, it is impossible to calculate all the types of fabrics and uniforms that will be used, which may mean the penetration of the item into the drum and the stop of the entire washing cycle.

If this happened, it is recommended, first of all, just try to pull out a foreign object in countercurrent movement of the drum, which in most cases will succeed - the object will be removed.

The main feature is that a foreign object can be removed by a “counter-current” movement to the drum, or the object has already penetrated beyond the drum and then assistance is needed. The second option is more complex and will require you to have a more complex algorithm of actions.

How do I pull out a foreign object with my own hands?

As mentioned above, there are two extraction options:

  • The movement of things against the movement of the drum. You need to rotate the drum with your hands until the object can be removed - you need to “rewind” everything as it were and safely remove the “blockage”. Also, on some models there may be installed automatic protection against such “emergency stops”, which will immediately stop the washing cycle, at the first overload in the engine, if such protection is not installed (found on budget models and Soviet-made models), it is recommended install it as an addition.

It is important to note! Some washing machines have a built-in “reverse rotation” function of the drum, which allows you to manually rewind the moving part of the element until the moment the item was “placed”. This helps to safely retrieve things, with minimal potential consequences for household appliances and clothing.

  • Removing things outside the drum. If the item is already outside the drum, it is necessary to remove it and disassemble the washing section. This can be done independently or brought to work by a profile wizard. In both cases, the machine must be disconnected from the power supply and all water drained. Further, following the factory recommendations and instructions for disassembling the "working compartment", you must open access to it. After that, it will be possible to retrieve the item - by stretching it in motion or, conversely, to help it exit with the help of a countercurrent.

You can use additional tools, such as a screwdriver or long metal spitz, to help retrieve things more efficiently. Try to use your fingers less - they are easily damaged when working with rotating elements of mechanisms.

If the situation is critical and there is no cure, - you need to cut the thing mechanically - you can use ordinary scissors or wire cutters, with the subsequent removal of all the remnants of the "work".

Of course, if possible, you need to refuse to wash this kind of things in the future that fall into the elements of the washing machine - use a hand wash or another washing machine for them.

What to do if the item is stuck in the tank of the washing machine?

A tank is the external, hermetic part of the drum, into which objects can also fall, without the possibility of their easy extraction.

If the object got into, without getting stuck and obstructing the work of the entire cycle, you just need to remove the protective, factory screen and get the “loss”.

If the "loss" interferes with the operation of the drum, - it is necessary to use the tips described above - to disassemble the "working compartment", with subsequent manipulations to remove it - in no case can you continue the washing cycle - this can be dangerous for a household appliance.

Tip! Some minor “loss” (phone cases, soft toys, socks, etc.) during washing can (sometimes with great surprise) be found in the tank — check it sometimes even for preventive purposes.

Some helpful suggestions

Tips:

  • Never neglect the washing instructions and recommendations that are indicated on the tag of things;
  • Never use a thing with which there has already been a “precedent” of getting into a tank or drum.

Try to never leave the washing machine unattended.
